| artist Joan McVilly title Why and How? description I took this in the Styx valley in southern Tasmania. Note the figure in lower left. It was part of an ancient forest that has had all its huge eucalypts taken out for woodchip. The rest of the forest has then been burnt to render it suitable for "regeneration" with a monoculture of same age, same species trees, destined for woodchip in about 30 years. The trees that are burnt are many hundreds of years old and could be logged individually, and at a very slow rate, for fine timber work. Or the forest could be left intact. We had just been in neighbouring, intact forest and had been overwhelmed by the grandeur and power of the great trees' existence. Then we came here. I was overwhelmed with deep sadness, and fear of not knowing what it is that separates me as a human from the people that are perpetrating this holocaust. It cannot just be knowledge. Is there something malignant in us that can override the Earth's voice? |
