I
drew this while staying with my brother's in the southern highlands. It
was high summer and the countryside looked lovely. When I drove to pick
my nephews up from school I would vary my route each afternoon, taking the
opportunity to sketch whatever took my fancy on the way.
On one of those trips I found myself near a field
covered in clumps of ripe blackberries. Dressed as I was in shorts and thongs,
I wasn't properly clothed for blackberry picking, so I ended up with thorns
in my toes and scratches on my legs as I waded through the grass. The blackberry
bushes looked so lush and the berries were delicious, so I made a quick
sketch of them hanging in the late afternoon sunshine, half expecting at
any minute to encounter a snake making the most of the summer warmth.
(I've since realised that I fell into a classic
trap for inexperienced sketchers - I got the light reflections in the berries
all wrong - but I still like this reminder of the day.)
